Goalscorers invariably claim the headlines and the glory. Gerrard’s name was up in lights the following morning but Carragher’s resilience helped Liverpool keep Milan’s late rally at bay. One of the most iconic images from Istanbul was of Carragher trying to get the cramp out of his legs. He had his hands on a goal-post, pushing hard with his foot rammed in the ground, trying to get the cramp out.

Whenever we get caught on the break with no-one in red near the ball and thinking the opponents will score, it’s always his foot that miraculously comes in for the block. Thanks for 17 years, Carra.
